Jackass Forever (stylized as jackass fore♥er) is a 2022 American reality comedy film directed and produced by Jeff Tremaine, along with producers Spike Jonze, and Johnny Knoxville, and was released by Paramount Pictures. It is the fourth main instalment in the Jackass film series, following Jackass 3D (2010). The film stars original Jackass members Knoxville, Steve-O, Dave England, Wee Man, Danger Ehren, Chris Pontius, Preston Lacy, newcomers to the Jackass crew, as well as celebrity guests.

Unused footage from the film was compiled separately, titled Jackass 4.5, and released on Netflix on May 20, 2022.

Cast[]

The cast from the previous films return, with the notable exceptions of original Jackass members Ryan Dunn and Bam Margera. Dunn passed away in 2011, but does appear through archival footage in the end credits which pay tribute to him.

Bam Margera was terminated from production in August 2020 for breaking his contract due to mandates related to substance abuse. However, he very briefly appears in "The Marching Band" - filmed prior to his firing - as well as in archival footage. Margera filmed the segment "Silence of the Lambs" with Steve-O but his scenes weren’t included in the final cut. He was also in the background of "The Triple Wedgie", but was removed for the most part.

This is also the first Jackass film to feature new core members, and to not to feature a guest appearance by Rip Taylor, who died in October 2019.

Development[]

In a 2018 interview, Johnny Knoxville said that he is open to making a fourth Jackass film that may feature some new cast members, "just to bring in some fresh blood into it".[1] He said that he continues to write ideas for a Jackass film and that "a ton" have been set aside should the project receive the green-light. In July 2019, cast member Chris Raab said that he had interviewed the Jackass crew on his Bathroom Break podcast and noted that everyone was still open to a fourth film should Knoxville, Jeff Tremaine, and Spike Jonze agree.[1] In a September 2020 interview with The A.V. Club, Steve-O had said he was surprised the film even came to fruition.[2]

During a January 2021 podcast interview, Bam Margera indicated that Paramount Pictures regards him as a liability, owing to his behavior over the last few years. He indicated that Tremaine had fought with the studio to keep Bam in the film but Bam still wasn't certain that Paramount was going to allow him to partake in filming of the movie.[3] On February 11, 2021, Bam posted several videos to his Instagram account, in which he admitted to breaking his sobriety and claimed that he had been officially fired from the filming of Jackass 4.[4] Throughout the video, Bam could be seen crying, vomiting, and alluding to having looked up "how to tie a noose" before his move to Oceanside, California. Margera alleged that Paramount had been forcing him to take antidepressants, submit to random urine tests, and to check in to two different rehabilitation facilities using his own money. He also expressed disdain for Jeff Tremaine, Johnny Knoxville, and Spike Jonze before asking his fans to boycott the film. He then solicited his followers to send him money in order to film his own movie to compete with Jackass 4. The videos were removed from Bam's Instagram account soon after being posted.[4][5]

On May 25, 2021, Tremaine filed a temporary restraining order against Bam due to his harassment of Tremaine and Knoxville via Instagram.[6] Tremaine was granted an additional three-year restraining order, extended to Tremaine's wife and children, after Bam allegedly sent the family death threats.[7] On August 9, 2021, Bam filed a lawsuit against Knoxville, Spike, and Tremaine, as well as against Paramount Pictures, MTV, Dickhouse Entertainment, and Gorilla Flicks, alleging that he was wrongfully fired from the film's production.[8] Bam also claims that the upcoming film makes use of contributions he made before his firing and is seeking an injunction on the October release of the film as a result.[9]

In a May 2021 GQ interview, Johnny Knoxville stated that Jackass Forever will be his final contribution to the Jackass franchise. "You can only take so many chances before something irreversible happens," Knoxville said. "I feel like I've been extremely lucky to take the chances I've taken and still be walking around."[10] On July 12, 2021, Knoxville was invited to an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where he revealed the film's new official title as Jackass Forever.[11]

Filming[]

Test filming started in early March 2020. During the two days of test filming, professional skateboarder Aaron "Jaws" Homoki broke his wrist.[12] On the first day of filming, the cast threw a bunch of snakes on Bam Margera in the dark to mess with his fear of snakes.[13] Two days after receiving the green-light, both Steve-O and Johnny Knoxville were hospitalized.[14] Steve-O and Wee Man confirmed that filming had shut down after a week because of the COVID-19 pandemic.[15][16] Principal photography commenced on December 14, 2020, with Dimitry Elyashkevich and Rick Kosick serving as cinematographers.[17] On December 15, 2020, it was publicly announced that Knoxville and Steve-O were hospitalized due to on-set injuries.[18][19]

Release[]

Jackass Forever was theatrically released by Paramount Pictures on February 4, 2022.[20] On December 19, 2019, Paramount confirmed that a fourth Jackass film is set for production and scheduled for release on March 5, 2021.[21] In April 2020, the release date was delayed to July 2, 2021.[22] In July 2020, the film was delayed again to September 3, 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.[23] In April 2021, the release date was again delayed until October 22, 2021.[24] In September 2021, the film was delayed once more to February 4, 2022.[20]
